So what exactly is a Tcode in SAP? Let’s first start with navigation in SAP (which few actually use once you know Tcodes). The standard way to move around the software from the old days before fancy web based fiori tiles (we will get to that later) was to open folders.. then subfolders.. then a subfolder after that and double click on the task you wanted to do.
Let’s start with an example, say you want to create a purchase order (if you don’t know what this is I’ll have a future post for this). This is how you would do that from the home page
You would navigate through the following folders Logistics-> Materials Management ->Purchasing -> Purchase Order -> Create -> Vendor/Supplying Plant Known

After double clicking on Vendor/Supplying Plant Known it brings up the Purchase Order Creation Screen where you can enter a vendor, the material & quantity you want to buy

Now, you’re thinking wow… that is a lot of folders to create a purchase order… what are all those potentially thousands of other folders/options to navigate through? Well you’re in luck since it’s actually much easier to get around and the key areas that you would focus on depending on your business area (sales/purchasing/finance) has a subset of tasks you would actually need to perform. But what if you didn’t want to have to go through all these folders? Is there any shortcut to get directly to that purchase order creation screen?
You’re in luck! SAP has made almost every subscreen accessible through a direct method called Tcodes (transaction codes). The way to do this is simply by finding out the relevant tcode you want (by googling or by finding through a folder structure and looking at the bottom right of your screen and expand to find the relevant tcode and putting that directly into SAPs tcode input section at the top
Now, before we do that here is a quick tip… just always but /n before any tcode… basically long story short if you’re already in a transaction and want to go to a new one you have to put /n since that tells SAP restart and go to the main menu than attempt my tcode (which is needed to navigate properly… so just trust me put /n
Let’s do an example… to get to that PO screen the Tcode is ME21N… now what did I just say above? Let’s put in /nME21N and see what happens!

That directs us straight to the purchase order creation screen from earlier

Now that you know what a tcode does, if you really want to breeze around SAP you’re going to need to know all the key tcodes in the system (after doing it for years trust me you will have 80% memorized)
Bonus tip! Want to search for a tcode not just in google but in SAP… you guessed it.. there’s a tcode to search for tcodes… plug in /nSE93 and voila! you can search for tcodes to use. Additionally when you’re using fiori you can still search by tcode and the relevant fiori tile will come up.
As a note fiori made it so most tcodes have their own app which can be navigated by clicking on the tiles. It is a modern UI for SAP that no longer uses the GUI but uses standard browsers to navigate SAP.
